CBD for asthma: can it help?

What is CBD oil? Are there any health-related aspects to CBD oil? Can CBD oil help with asthma cases? How effective is CBD oil when consumed by an individual? This article focuses on how CBD works for asthma, the benefits and limitations of using CBD for asthma, and how you can start using CBD.

CBD can help with asthma. The current information is less than ideal. But that does not change that asthma affects millions of people in the United States. Conventional treatments are available with various degrees of success. But not everyone reacts well and may want an alternative reaction. Despite that CBD and asthma are loosely connected, there is a chance it can be connected with the difficult and potentially different and dangerous complications associated with the condition.

Does CBD Help with Asthma?

Mamber et al. (2020) explained that CBD oil could help with asthma by addressing reactions like inflammation associated with various conditions. But the research is pretty sparse on the type of asthma that is controllable or treatable using CBD. It is known through several studies that there are six different types of asthma. They include Allergic, occupational, non-allergic, adult-onset asthma, asthma-COPD overlap, and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. From the recently conducted research, CBD has shown a positive impact on some kinds of asthma. The studies have not covered all the six types of asthma. The non-allergic and allergic categories have received more attention. So, we are going to focus on the two types.

Research on Allergic Asthma and CBD

As the name sound, allergic asthma is triggered by some allergens. It can range from cockroaches to pollen. A study conducted in 2019 in the European Journal of pharmacology looked at allergic asthma in mice and found that it can help reduce air hyperresponsiveness via its direct link with the CB1 and CB2 receptors. Wang et al. (2020) explain that CBD helps alert the body to create an anti-inflammatory response through this pathway. There is evidence that the above experiment treatment can work on humans. But much more animal and human tests are required. Research cannabinoids as bronchodilators in non-allergic asthma date back some decades. A report published by clinical pharmacology in 1984 saw delta -8 and delta-9 THC results, but they did not notice any change with CBD. But the CBD dose was a massive 1200 mg above the necessary amount for new consumers. Given the cannabidiols biphasic behavior, a serving may not have been necessary. Biphasic means that the CBD potency is not linear. When you exceed the ideal dose, the benefit starts to drop. The researchers did not know or fully understand the issue. Therefore, it begs whether introducing CBD may have produced different results.

What Does CBD Do for The Body?

Despite asthma being well defined, the patients experience different severities and triggers. The treatment response can also differ. Regardless of what you deal with, the asthma inflammatory response constricts the airways making it difficult to breathe. The reactions can lead to wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Universally, the conditions can be limiting or potentially deadly in case of severe asthma. Inhaled and oral conditions are available for treatment and prevention, and there is no cure. As an asthma patient, you may be surprised at how CBD oil can improve your quality of life.

Mechanism

Asthma is a potential and deadly respiratory condition, but how does it work? As per the American Lung Association, asthma puts the lining of your airways into a hypersensitive state making the airways red and swollen, more than how the skin reacts to the sunburn. Some known asthma triggers are weather changes, illness, stress, allergens, chemicals, and smoke. As a trigger does not necessarily lead to a life-threatening emergency, it’s likely to cause a flare-up or asthma attack.

As the airways inflame and constrict, the surrounding muscles also tighten, and in some cases, this abstracts the breathing fully. At this time, you urgently need medical help. CBD has been found to help with wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath during an asthma attack. There is more supporting evidence that CBDs have potential anti-inflammatory properties as inflammation is the driving mechanism during flare-ups; thus, there is a chance that CBD can work, as explained by Baral et al. (2020).

Complications

Once treated, the patients can live fairly normal lives. But if you fail to address the problem, asthma may cause a condition known as airway remodeling. Laitinen et al. (1985) say the American Lung Association, ignoring asthma can eventually lead to long-term or permanent damage. Eventually, these scars can worsen and reduce the effectiveness of asthma medications.

How Is Asthma Treated?

For the patients, there are many treatment options. According to the American lung association Asthma Clinical Research (2001), the medication is available for long-term and preventative solutions and immediate short-term relief. Anti-inflammation medication is one option, as CBD is reported to have the potential to reduce swelling.

How to Prevent Asthma Attacks

Because there is no treatment for asthma, you remain the only option for treatment and prevention. Remember that ignoring is the worst thing you can ever do. So you should not wait. Prevention is the best treatment. Prescribed medications may be effective, butting triggers are also an excellent way to avoid flare-ups.

Side Effects of Taking CBD for Asthma?

CBD has some commonly known side effects, but they are mild and often temporary. A study on cannabis noticed that CBD has the following side effects: Appetite changes, fatigue, weight loss, weight gain, and diarrhea, as noted by Devinsky et al. (2018). CBD can interact with other medications and trigger other side effects. It is good to consult the doctor first because the interference could be dangerous.

Can CBD Interfere with Any Asthma Medication?

Dell & Stein (2021) stated yes, as CBD can interfere with other asthma medications as explained that smoking cannabis can reduce theophylline levels. The drug prevents asthma flare-ups by relaxing the airways. Currently, there is no information on whether CBD oil or any ingested CBD product interacts with theophylline. Along with asthma, the drug treat illness such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The issue stems from the presence of CBD in the liver, which metabolizes CBD using the P450 liver enzyme family but unfortunately, most the medications do the same. Once forced to share, the enzyme CBD dilutes or increases the medication’s blood concentration. This problem can theoretically reduce or increase the effects of oral asthma medication. These can weaken the benefits of the medicine or trigger some side effects. In severe scenarios, the contradiction can impact lung function.

Conclusions

CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects on asthma need some more research. There could be some potential theoretically. But it is unlikely CBD for asthma will be at the forefront of medical research. CBD has been proved to have anti-inflammatory effects in clinical studies, and it can also be a promising treatment in the future.
